Senior Prom 2023
Another year is quickly coming to an end, and nothing signals the end a school year more than senior celebrations like prom and graduation. Because I have always have seniors in my AP Calculus classes, I try to chaperone every year. This year, our school’s prom was held at a local college again. The theme was “An Enchanted Evening,” and the Prom Committee and Senior Class Advisors did a great job setting up! The committee spent all morning and early afternoon at the venue getting everything set up and decorated, and chaperones arrived an hour before the doors opened to get everything finalized: the check-in table, the name card table, and the mug table (every senior gets a personalized mug to take home).
For years, our school’s prom was held at a local country club, which was a beautiful setting that lent itself well to outdoor group photos. The inside was always laid out well with round tables for dinner, a dance floor, a separate area with couches for mingling, and a patio. The country club stopped hosting events right around when Covid hit, which is when we started holding prom at a local college’s student center building. This venue has a completely different feel; more elegant and formal, with huge floor to ceiling windows, a high ceiling, and more open floor plan.
Dinner is always catered and a DJ is in charge of music the entire evening. One of the biggest hits (with students and teachers) the past couple years has been the PHOTO BOOTH (highly recommend this for any event) that immediately prints out as many copies of a photo set that you want (highly recommend this for any event).
This year’s prom ran very smoothly with basically no issues, drama, or arguments. Even though teaching the next morning is always rough after staying late to tear down the decorations and clean up, I love being a part of this milestone for our seniors. It’s a chance to see everyone all dressed up and having fun, and one of the final times we will see them before they are officially done with high school. It’s also fun hanging out with the other teacher chaperones and really having a chance to catch up and talk without having to rush off to make copies or prep for our next class. Added bonus: it’s the perfect chance to get great photos with my seniors for my classroom’s Senior Wall!
