LAST Day of School!

This year, our final day of school occurred today, on 6/20. Because of our fifth snow day that we got in March, our last day of school spilled into a new week, and with Juneteenth on Monday, that fell on a Tuesday. Most students did not come today, and instead, recognized Friday 6/16 as their last day of school. Attendance is not taken on the final day anyways, so most chose to stay home or have already begun summer travels.

I was lucky to have some students come to my room in the morning, and they helped me hole-punch, alphabetize, and hang this year’s “About Me” pennants. They also helped me pack up materials that I will need to teach my “AP Calculus bootcamp” at a local college next week, and more importantly, helped me put all of these materials in my car (this saved me at least four long trips!).

Here are tasks that have kept me busy this past week as I wrap up my eleventh year of teaching:

  • GRADE, GRADE, and grade some more! Final exams especially, then double checking that all assignments on Google Classroom have been graded

  • Calculate final overall grades and submit Q4 and overall grades online

  • Complete “final failure form” on Google Sheets for any students who failed

  • Complete “NCA” (no credit due to absences) Google Forms for any student who passed but got more than 14 absences

  • Create a Google Classroom for next year’s AP Calculus class and populate it with resources, extra help websites, and introductory worksheets

  • Finalize AP Calculus summer work and make copies to distribute to next year’s students

  • Clean whiteboards

  • Clorox wipe all the desks

  • Lock up the graphing calculators that were hung up in a shoe rack

  • Collect and lock up the scientific calculators that were attached to desks with Velcro

  • Organize, clean up, refill, and lock up student supply bins that are typically on each group

  • Put away all storage bins, hanging files, drawer organizers, student supplies

  • Collect, check off, and organize textbooks

  • Complete a “Lost Book” Google Form for any student who did not return their textbook

  • Hang pennants for this year’s sophomore class

  • Print out and laminate photos taken of this year’s senior class to hang on my senior wall.

Also, for me personally, a huge part of my week has been preparing for my AP Calculus bootcamp class that I am teaching next week. Additionally, I am taking a Graduate-level education class to help me recertify my teaching license. Today and tomorrow are the Zoom calls for this class, from 4 - 6:30, so there was a bit of reading and prep work to do ahead of time for this evening’s call.

For me, my summer will officially begin next Friday after my bootcamp class ends!
